viñu-vinu is the electronic music alias for Montreal-based pianist, keyboardist, composer and producer Gabriel Vinuela. The name viñu-vinu pays homage to Gabriel’s Chilean heritage and comes from the francization of his father’s last name: Viñuela to Vinuela. Gabriel works with synths, keys, field recordings and a wide array of sampling technics to produce atmospheric and lively instrumentals, where rich harmonies and melodies mix with textural electronic experimentations. As viñu-vinu he has released three EPs, Echoes from Afar (Mystery Circles, 2018), Encounters (Mystery Circles, 2017), Études-Tableaux (self-released, 2016) and a handful of singles and 2 tracks on Unlog’s EMinQc Vol.2 and Complex 09 compilations. His project Encounters was created as a musical journey in 7 pieces exploring throughout the album subjects of origin, identity, changes and evolution. It features lush instrumental beats with textural electronics, rich layers of synths, ambient soundscapes and organic field recordings. Gabriel is also the pianist and co-leader of Parc X trio (2010 TD Grand Prize for Jazz at the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal) and co-founder of Montreal jazz label Multiple Chord Music. viñu-vinu has performed live at La Nuit Blanche - Festival Montréal en Lumière and at MUTEK Montreal in 2018 and L’OFF Festival de Jazz Montréal, Pop Montréal, Acadie Rock/CMA in 2019. viñu-vinu is now working on his first LP Exilio Transitorio, an album inspired by a book of poem written by his father Francisco Viñuela after his exile from Chile in 1973.

Echoes from Afar

One year after releasing his last album Encounters, Montreal-based electronic music artist viñu-vinu (alias for pianist, composer and producer Gabriel Vinuela) comes back with a new EP titled Echoes from Afar. Inspired by unknown faraway lands and nature, Echoes from Afar's colorful and gorgeously evocative soundscapes seek the fine line between ambient experimental textures and downtempo beats all applied in live electronic music performances. All the tracks in this new EP were recorded live during a residency at the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity in December 2017 and in Montreal in the winter 2018. From this commitment to organic processes and spontaneity, emerge dreamlike sonic tapestries that develop naturally and let the listener’s mind drift between a state of consciousness and unconsciousness.

Produced, mixed and mastered by viñu-vinu.

All tracks were recorded live during a residency at the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity December 2017 and in Montreal winter 2018.
